Features of the Tokai area
Feature1A beautiful land rich
in nature
The Tokai area is home to mountains, including the Kiso, Hida, and Suzuka mountain ranges. It also faces Mikawa Bay and Ise Bay, into which many Class A rivers (which are particularly important in terms of land conservation
and the national economy), such as the Three Kiso Rivers (Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi) flow. The area includes the vast Nobi Plain and other smaller plains where agriculture has thrived and people have lived since ancient
times, as well as the Chita and Atsumi peninsulas and islands, providing a wealth of marine products. The Tokai area is also famed as the birthplace of Seto pottery thanks to the availability of high-quality clay.
Feature2A unique food culture
developed over the centuries
The Tokai area has long served as a major transport hub. Many people visited the post towns during the Edo period (1603–1869). In terms of foods, it flexibly accepted the cultures of eastern and western Japan, leading
to the emergence of a unique food culture, and is renowned for seasonings derived from brewing technologies, such as soy sauce and miso. Tamari soy sauce, white soy sauce, and red miso are well-known specialties
of this area today. Many cuisines and processed products use these unique seasonings.
Feature3A variety of internationally-
reputed fermented foods
The Tokai area is home to many breweries for fermented foods such as mirin and vinegar, in addition to those for soy sauce and miso. While typical soy sauce is made from soybean and wheat, the locally-popular tamari
soy sauce is made from soybean alone, and so is thick and has a deep flavor. Red miso, including hatcho miso, is also popular for its rich taste and is not found in other areas. Other manufacturers specialize in
the production of vinegar and mirin. The Tokai area offers a broad range of fermented foods renowned globally as health foods.
Feature4A gateway for foreigners visiting Japan for tourism and business
The popularity of Japan as a tourist destination has grown dramatically, and the number of arrivals in Aichi Prefecture increased sharply during the five years from 2015. Chubu Centrair International Airport reported
the second largest increase in number of arrivals in Japan, following New Chitose Airport (source: immigration control statistics released by the Immigration Services Agency, Ministry of Justice). The Tokai area
is a convenient gateway to the world, taking just 30 minutes to travel between the airport and city. The area attracts many tourists and business persons, and is developing as a traffic hub and an international
city.
